Oświetlony nocą Wawel odbijający się w wodach Wisły

In the evening in Krakow you can walk round the Planty or along the embankments below Wawel, cross the Bernatek Footbridge to Podgórze, climb Krakus Mound, listen to the trumpet call on the Main Market Square, head down into Rynek Underground, pick a concert or a play, or play an escape room or a city game with friends. Below you’ll find a dozen or so ideas, grouped by what you need: a free walk, a roof over your head when it rains, or a shared challenge.

For each idea we say whether you need a ticket or a booking. We don’t give opening hours or prices, because they change. Where it matters, we link to the official website.

A walk, no ticket needed

1. The Planty around the Old Town. The Planty is a green belt about 4 km long, laid out where the old fortifications once stood. It’s made up of eight gardens, so it’s easy to walk just a section, for example from the Barbican towards Wawel, and turn off to the Main Market Square at any point.

2. The trumpet call on the hour. The St Mary’s trumpet call (hejnał) is played every hour, day and night, in four directions in turn: towards Wawel, the Main Market Square, the Barbican and the former guard headquarters. It’s played by firefighters. Just be on the square a few minutes before the hour and listen as the tune rings out from each of the tower’s four windows in turn.

3. The embankments below Wawel and the dragon. On Bulwar Czerwieński stands the Wawel Dragon statue by Bronisław Chromy. You can see it for free and without any steps. Sometimes the dragon breathes fire, thanks to a gas installation, but don’t count on a particular time. From here you can carry on along the Vistula embankment.

4. The Father Bernatek Footbridge. This footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists links Kazimierz with Podgórze. Its arch is lit from below and the railings have LED lighting, so after dark it looks different from how it does in the daytime. Above the footbridge hang balancing sculptures of acrobats by Jerzy Kędziora.

5. Krakus Mound. According to the city’s Krakow Travel website, it’s the oldest structure in the city: a 16-metre mound on the Krzemionki hill in Podgórze. Entry is free. It’s a green hill, not a city promenade, so if you don’t know the way, plan to go up before it’s fully dark and go with company.

Indoors, when it’s raining or cold

6. Rynek Underground. This branch of the Museum of Krakow, beneath the surface of the Main Market Square, presents medieval Krakow as part of Europe. On some days it’s open into the evening, but the hours depend on the day of the week, and it’s closed on one Monday a month. Check current opening hours and tickets on the Rynek Underground website.

7. A concert. At the Krakow Philharmonic you can hear live classical music. Check the programme and tickets on the institution’s website, ideally a few days before the evening you have in mind.

8. A play. An evening at the theatre, for example at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, usually means buying a ticket in advance. Check the programme on the theatre’s website and don’t leave it to the last minute if you have a particular date in mind.

9. The opera. The programme of the Krakow Opera includes opera, operetta and ballet. A good idea for an evening for two if you both enjoy live music.

A shared challenge instead of another café

10. An escape room. If you want to focus on one adventure for an hour, go for an escape room. At Gamescape, ul. Tadeusza Kościuszki 74, most scenarios last 65 minutes, and the longest, House of Krak, takes 90 minutes. You can play with just two people, and the rooms aren’t locked. You choose the time slot when you book, so check for a free slot before you leave home rather than hoping to walk in off the street.

11. A city game in an app. The Krakow Legends app is a game on your phone: you walk to points on the map, and a task unlocks when you get there. There’s no time limit and no fixed start time, you can take breaks, and the whole group plays on one phone. It usually takes about one and a half to two hours, so in the evening start early enough.

12. A riddle on a walk with your child. By the dragon on the embankment you can tell the legend and ask why cleverness, not strength, wins in this story. It’s a short game with no ticket, good for the early evening.

Ready-made combos for one evening

Single ideas are easy to combine, because some of them are right next to each other:

Collage from a pirate themed escape room: players in hats, a pirate skeleton and a panther figure
  • The Old Town (no tickets): the Planty, the Main Market Square on the hour for the trumpet call, and to finish, down the Planty towards Wawel and the embankments with the dragon.
  • Kazimierz and Podgórze: the embankment, the Bernatek Footbridge to Podgórze, and up Krakus Mound before dark.
  • A rainy evening: Rynek Underground or an escape room, then a concert or a play if you’ve managed to get tickets.
  • For two: an escape room for two people or a city game at your own pace, then a walk along the embankment.
  • A group of friends: an escape room that fits your group size, or a city game on one phone when you don’t want to book a specific time.

How to get home after a late evening

After an evening out, don’t assume the tram will run like it does in the daytime. Krakow has night lines, but they have different numbers and routes from the daytime ones. Before you go out, check your journey home in the MPK journey planner. If you’re planning dinner after a game or a play, don’t book it to the minute. On top of the length of the event, allow time for getting there, the introduction and leaving.

Being tired after a busy day is a good reason to pick a shorter walk instead of a big plan. Krakow in the evening doesn’t need you to tick off lots of sights. One well-chosen thing is enough to give an ordinary evening a story of its own.
