In Krakow, you can build a Harry Potter-themed birthday around a magical game. Gamescape at ul. Tadeusza Kościuszki 74 has two options like this: the Enchanted Amulets escape room and the Magic Portal city game. Neither is an official adaptation of the books. Both tell their own story about magic, so all it takes is a birthday child who loves spells, and the guests don’t need to know every volume.

The choice mainly depends on the age and experience of the team. The operator rates Enchanted Amulets at 7/10 for difficulty and Magic Portal at 4/10, and recommends Magic Portal for children aged 7 to 12. Decorations, invitations and the cake are your part of the preparations, so below we separate what the game provides from what’s worth preparing yourself.

Enchanted Amulets: a story of magic all its own

Enchanted Amulets at Gamescape has its own storyline. A sorcerer has set the Schools of Magic against one another. Players search for the amulets they need to find the Cup of Life and free the mages trapped in frozen bodies.

This theme may suit a group that likes unusual objects and working out the rules of a fantasy world together. The game is about solving puzzles, not about knowing the details of the Harry Potter books. So the birthday child doesn’t need to check who has read every volume.

The room card lists 65 minutes of play, a team of 2 to 8 and a difficulty of 7/10 on the operator’s scale. The room is dimly lit. The Game Master follows the game and stays in constant contact with the team, and the doors stay unlocked. A difficulty rating like this is a sign to tell the operator about the children’s age and their experience with escape rooms when you book. On the birthday packages page, the operator notes that a parent or group supervisor must be in every room, and the game rules (in Polish) state that a child under 14 plays together with an adult guardian, who also takes part in the game. For a group made up only of children, the number of supervisors is agreed with the staff, depending on the number of players. It’s also worth letting them know if any of the guests doesn’t cope well with low light.

Magic Portal: magic on the streets of Krakow

If your guests are younger children, or the weather is good for a walk, an alternative is the Magic Portal city game. The story is about a portal that has opened into a magical world. To close it, you need to find crystals scattered around the city.

According to the game card, a team of 1 to 6 plays on a tablet with a map and augmented reality elements. The game lasts up to 120 minutes, the route is up to 3.5 km long and heads towards Wawel, and the start and finish are at ul. Kościuszki 74. The operator recommends the game for children aged 7 to 12 and rates its difficulty at 4/10.

With a bigger group, think about splitting into teams. Each one can get its own colour and a name made up by the birthday child. Back at the start, it’s easy to compare who found which crystals.

How to choose between the room and the city game

  • Younger children, first time with puzzles: Magic Portal, because the operator recommends it for ages 7 to 12 and gives it a lower difficulty rating.
  • Older children, teenagers or adult fans: Enchanted Amulets, if the team enjoys a challenge and feels comfortable in low light.
  • December or a rainy day: the escape room, because the whole game takes place indoors.
  • A large group of guests: ask about splitting into several teams, because the room takes up to 8 people and the city game up to 6 per team.

An invitation that starts the adventure

You can write a letter inviting guests to join an imaginary society of amulet hunters or portal guardians. Include the usual practical details plus one small task, for example scrambled letters that spell the password “MAGIC”. Make sure solving it isn’t the only way to find out the address or the time.

Give the parents a separate plan of the party, the pick-up time and information about supervision. The invitation can be mysterious for the children, but the arrangements should stay clear for the adults.

A cape or a paper badge can add to the mood. Choose extras that don’t restrict movement or make it hard to look at objects. Any props you bring along need to be agreed with the staff in advance.

Decorations and little extras in magical style

You can create a magical atmosphere at home or in a party room with simple things. A few ideas that don’t need a big budget:

  • letters with a wax seal, or stickers, handed to guests as they arrive,
  • coloured scarves or armbands for the teams,
  • “potions”, that is, juice in bottles with handwritten labels,
  • a book of spells where each guest writes a birthday wish for the birthday child.

There’s no need to recreate a film set. One consistent theme that runs through the invitation, the decorations and the certificate is enough.

Don’t make the birthday child the only hero

It’s their special day, but the tasks should give the whole team a sense of achievement. A good idea is to agree that any clues you find are shown to everyone, and that you listen to a few suggestions before making a decision.

If one child knows escape rooms much better than the others, you can ask them to be the helper. Instead of giving away the answer, they can ask a question that nudges the rest of the team in the right direction. An adult can also give the group a moment to try on their own before stepping in with their own idea.

Plan the cake and the get-together after the game separately

Gamescape has birthday packages for children aged 8 to 14. According to the operator’s website, they include the game, juice and water, plates and cutlery, a present for the birthday child, photos, certificates, invitations for the guests and sweet treats. A room for the party food is only included in some of the packages. The cake and decorations aren’t mentioned in the description, so sort them out before you send the invitations. If the cake is going to be somewhere else, allow for the journey and an easy pick-up for the children.

After the game, you can add each child’s specific contribution to their certificate. One noticed an important detail, another connected the information, and someone helped the team get back on track. An ending like this keeps the birthday story going even if not every puzzle got solved.
