For a weekend in Krakow with a group of friends, the best plans are things you can do together and outdoors: a walk along the river embankments, climbing a mound, a trip to Wolski Forest, a city game with puzzles or a picnic with a board game. If the weather turns, there are escape rooms and museums. Below you’ll find twelve ideas, each with a note on what to check beforehand, plus a quick way to settle on one plan instead of debating it all week.

The group chat lights up with yet another “so what are we doing on Saturday?”. You’ve already done the cinema, nobody fancies a trip out of town, and the forecast is tempting you outside. You want to meet up and move about a bit, but this time it would help to have a shared goal.

Outdoors, no tickets needed

  1. A walk along the Vistula Embankments. The embankments run along the foot of Wawel. There are footpaths and cycle paths, entry is free and the area is step-free. A good meeting point if your group is coming from different parts of the city.
  2. The view from Krakus Mound. Krakus Mound in Podgórze is 16 metres high and is regarded as the oldest structure in the city. Entry is free. According to the District XIII Podgórze Council (in Polish), the top offers a panoramic view of Krakow.
  3. Wolski Forest for a longer walk. Wolski Forest is the largest forest park in Krakow, 422 hectares between Wola Justowska and Bielany. It has 8 walking trails with a total length of 35 km. Along the way you’ll find Sowiniec Hill with Piłsudski Mound, the Camaldolese monastery on Srebrna Góra and the zoo. Agree in advance which trail you’re taking, because “let’s meet in Wolski Forest” isn’t enough.
  4. Zakrzówek Park. The park has a seasonal, free bathing area with platforms. There’s a limit on the number of people on the platforms, so on a hot weekend you may have to queue. Check the season dates and rules on the Zakrzówek website (in Polish). Outside the bathing season the park is still good for a walk.
  5. A picnic with a board game from the library. Biblioteka Kraków (in Polish), the city library, lends board games from ten branches for 31 days. You can reserve a game through the online catalogue, and each branch lends one game at a time. Take it onto a blanket on the embankments or into a park.

With puzzles and a shared goal

  1. A city game in an app. The Krakow Legends app is a game on your phone that leads you along a route through the city centre. Tasks unlock at successive points on the map. There’s no time limit and no fixed start time, you can take breaks, and one access covers the whole group playing on one phone. A good choice if you don’t know when everyone will turn up.
  2. A city game with a host. In EscapeCity’s AR City Games, each team gets an iPad with a map and augmented reality, and the game has scoring and hints. The scenarios differ in mood and neighbourhood. Eight Portals is a fantasy story in leafy Zwierzyniec, Operation Mindfall is a secret agent mission, and The Last Crime has a crime theme, also in Zwierzyniec. According to the catalogue, these three routes are about 3.5 km long and take about 140 minutes. For these you need to book a slot with the team.
  3. The Stanisław Lem Experimental Garden. In Park Lotników Polskich at al. Pokoju 68 there are around 110 devices for testing phenomena from mechanics, optics, acoustics and magnetism for yourself. According to Krakow Travel, the garden is open from April to October. It’s not just fun for kids, especially if you like seeing who’s better at predicting how an experiment will turn out.

With a view, some history or culture

  1. Kościuszko Mound. The mound at al. Waszyngtona 1 is run by the Mound Committee. Entry requires a ticket, and there’s a museum on site with an exhibition about Kościuszko. You can combine it with a walk along Aleja Waszyngtona towards Wolski Forest.
  2. Kazimierz at an easy pace. Once a separate town, and from the late 15th century also a Jewish town centred on Szeroka Street. Krakow Travel describes its history and key sights. After 1989 the district came back to life, with galleries and cultural institutions, so a walk can easily turn into a whole afternoon.
  3. An event from the city calendar. Karnet Kraków, run by the Krakow Festival Office, lists concerts, performances, exhibitions, festivals and film screenings. Have a look on Thursday, before you settle your Saturday plan.

When the weather turns

  1. An escape room. If rain rules out your outdoor plan, a Gamescape escape room gives you the same shared goal under a roof. Before you pick a room, check its page for the number of players and any warnings about tight passages.

A museum also works on a rainy day. At Rynek Underground, individual tickets are sold at the ticket office on the day of your visit, so you don’t need to plan ahead, but last entry is 75 minutes before closing.

How to pick one plan for the whole group

Instead of posting twelve links in the chat, ask two questions. Do you want to do something, or mainly spend time together? And can everyone agree on a specific time?

  • You want a shared task, but your timings don’t line up: the app game or a board game picnic.
  • You want a shared task and can agree on a time: a hosted game or an escape room.
  • You just want to meet up and chat: the embankments, a mound or Wolski Forest.

If some people in the group are only just getting to know each other, don’t force competition. A shared goal can be enough to get the conversation going. Someone who came for a walk with friends doesn’t necessarily want to fight for the top score.

A Saturday plan without rushing between sights

Let’s say you go for a game in the middle of the day. First, set a meeting time with some slack for getting there and for the briefing. Then block out the time given for your chosen route. Only after that, plan a meal or a longer walk.

Don’t book a table for the exact minute the mission ends. You still need to return the kit, wrap up and get to the restaurant. If you feel like talking about the game, rushing will quickly spoil that part of the afternoon.

Also, don’t squeeze three big things into one day. Wolski Forest, a city game and Kościuszko Mound add up to quite a few kilometres. One bigger activity and one quieter one are enough.

What if the forecast changes?

Check the rules for changing your booking and dress for the route. EscapeCity says the game goes ahead as normal in light rain, and in a gale, downpour or thunderstorm a new date is arranged. With the app game, you simply pause. Water and comfortable shoes are useful in the city too, and in summer factor in the sun.

If someone in the group has limited mobility, talk about it before you choose. Krakow Travel describes the embankments and Wolski Forest as step-free, but forest trails are still terrain, not pavement. For a city game, ask the organiser about stairs, surfaces and walking distances.

So post one concrete suggestion in the group chat: what you’re doing, where you’re meeting, how long it’ll take and whether anything needs booking. Fewer messages about what you “could do”, more clarity about what your Saturday will actually look like.
