Uczniowie stoją w kręgu, złączeni dłońmi

For a student get-together in Krakow, the activities that work best are the ones where the group shares a goal: an escape room for a few people, a city game for your whole year, board games borrowed from the city library, or a free meet-up in a park or by the Vistula. The choice mainly depends on the size of the group and your budget. Below we describe each option, with the terms checked on official websites in September 2026.

Playing together can be a good way to get to know people on your course, or a chance to meet those you usually only see in class. The team doesn’t have to be made up of puzzle fans. What matters is that people want to give it a go and know what kind of activity they’ve signed up for.

Small groups: an escape room

An escape room suits teams of a few people. In Gamescape’s rooms you can play with as few as two, and a game lasts 65 minutes. A bigger year group can split into several teams playing at the same time in different rooms, and then all meet up after the game.

Figurine in a box

It’s a concrete shared experience you can talk about afterwards, without promising that it will automatically improve how you work together at uni. One person might find an object faster, someone else might spot a link between clues. It’s worth agreeing to share your discoveries out loud. An object that only one person has looked at isn’t yet information the whole group can use.

The whole year at once: a city game

When the group is big, an outdoor game works better. EscapeCity runs city games where each team gets an iPad with a GPS map and augmented reality tasks. For example, the Blackout game takes place in Kazimierz, for teams of four to six, and according to the operator it goes ahead whatever the weather. In light rain the game runs as planned, and in extreme weather the operator offers another date.

The cheapest option is an app-based game. The Krakow Legends app runs on a phone, with no time limit or fixed start time, and you can take breaks. Any number of people can play on one phone, so the group can split into teams according to the number of phones.

No ticket needed: parks, a mound, the boulevards

A get-together doesn’t have to come with an entry fee. The Vistula Embankments at the foot of Wawel have walking and cycling paths. Krakus Mound in Podgórze is open to everyone and free, and from the top you get a panoramic view of the city. In summer there’s a free bathing area at Zakrzówek, with lifeguards and a limit on the number of people on the walkways, so when it’s busy you may have to wait.

A trip to the park is easy to combine with a simple challenge. In the Municipal Greenspace Authority’s Odkrywca Krakowskich Parków programme (Krakow Parks Explorer, in Polish), there are booths with stamps to collect in a booklet in 78 parks. Taking part is free.

Board games from the city library

Biblioteka Kraków, the city library, lends board games at ten branches. You reserve a game through the catalogue and can keep it for 31 days, one game from any one branch. You’ll find the rules on the Biblioteka Kraków board games page (in Polish). It’s a good idea for an evening in halls when the budget for going out has run dry.

Budgeting for a student outing

Before you book, split the full cost between the people who’ve confirmed. Check whether the price depends on the team, the number of players or the date. Plan transport and any meal after the game separately.

Magic treasure chest with a purple glow

If you’re counting on a student discount, read its terms in the operator’s rules. At Gamescape, the discount requires a valid student ID when you book and showing it before the game, one ID covers one person, and the discount only applies on weekdays, Monday to Friday. So a weekend booking won’t qualify. Prices change, so don’t factor the discount into your whip-round until it’s been confirmed when you book.

Sharing tasks without fixed labels

There’s no need to decide in advance who’s “the maths one” and who’s “the creative one”. Roles like that can reinforce the idea that some tasks are only for certain people. It’s better to let everyone try different things.

When the team gets stuck, one person can sum up what you already know and another can remind everyone of the ideas you haven’t tested yet. After the next stage you can swap. It’s a way of organising the work that you’ll need to adapt to the game.

How to choose the right activity

  • Up to a dozen or so people and a budget for tickets: an escape room, with several teams playing at the same time. On weekdays, check the student discount.
  • A whole year group or several dozen people: a city game in teams, which doesn’t need everyone to fit into one room.
  • Zero budget: the boulevards, Krakus Mound, the bathing area in season, park stamps or board games from the library.
  • A bad forecast: an indoor escape room or board games. For a city game in extreme weather, the operator offers another date.

What to talk about afterwards

Pick one moment when sharing information helped. What did someone notice, and how did the rest of the group react? That’s a more useful conversation than working out who mattered most for the result.

If the game is meant to support your classes, it needs its own goal and a way to check the outcome. If it’s just a social get-together, a shared adventure and time to get to know each other without the pressure of grades are all you need.
