For an active May long weekend in Krakow, three directions work well: a hike in Ojców National Park, a city game in Krakow, or a bike ride along the Vistula to Tyniec. Each option gives your day a different rhythm. Instead of picking the most ambitious plan, match the route to the people coming with you, and leave yourself the option of cutting the outing short.

The May long weekend also means more interest in popular places. It’s worth checking transport, bookings and opening hours before you set off, and on public holidays also the public transport timetable, which may differ from the usual one.

Which idea should you choose?

  • You want nature and rocks, and a trip out of town doesn’t put you off: Ojców and the Prądnik Valley.
  • You’d rather stay in the city and walk with a purpose: a city game.
  • You have bikes in good shape and fancy a few hours in the saddle: the Vistula Cycle Route towards Tyniec.
  • The weather is uncertain or your group has mixed fitness levels: a short version of one of the options, plus an indoor plan.

1. Ojców and the Prądnik Valley

Ojców National Park lies about 16 km north of Krakow and is the smallest national park in Poland. It lets you combine a walk with limestone rocks and the scenery of the valley. You can plan a chosen section of a trail, and separately consider a cave or a visit around Pieskowa Skała and Maczuga Herkulesa (Hercules’ Club).

On its website, the park describes several routes of about 9 km, including the Szlak Dolinek Jurajskich (Jurassic Valleys Trail), the Szlak Warowni Jurajskich (Jurassic Strongholds Trail) and the route from Łokietek Cave to Pieskowa Skała. For each one it marks whether it’s suitable for children, dogs or bikes, so it’s worth checking before you choose a section. The longest cave in the park is Łokietek Cave (320 m), and the tourist sites also include Ciemna Cave and the castle in Ojców.

You don’t have to link all the points into one walking loop. Check the distances and how you’ll get back. The caves and the castle have their own opening hours and tickets, separate from whether the trail is open. The park publishes them together with its tourist notice, which also lists open trails, car parks and the rules for hiking with a dog.

Inside the park, follow the waymarks and the current notices. The rocks aren’t an invitation to climb wherever you like. With a family, allow for stops, water and the pace of the youngest.

2. Krakow as a game board

A city game gives your walk a story-driven goal. Players don’t just walk from place to place, they look for information and make decisions. In Eight Portals, you can explore old Zwierzyniec in a fantasy scenario. According to the game card, it’s for 1 to 4 players per team, on a route of up to 3.5 km around Aleja Waszyngtona and Emaus, with the start and finish at ul. Kościuszki 74. The team gets an iPad with a map. Other Gamescape city games offer a spy or crime mission. A dark case isn’t a substitute for a family story just because both lead you through Krakow.

Before you choose, check the start, the finish, the time and the equipment. Games with a tablet handed out by staff have a fixed start time and the equipment has to be returned. A self-guided app on your phone works differently: in the Krakow Legends app there’s no time limit and no fixed start time, and you can take breaks and come back to the game later. This option is easier to combine with a picnic or a rest.

It’s a good direction for a group that wants to walk and solve challenges at the same time. If someone would rather have a relaxed walk without a countdown, choose the option that matches that expectation. On a holiday weekend, leave extra time to get to the starting point.

3. By bike along the Vistula

The Vistula Cycle Route runs through Małopolska for about 230 km, mostly along the flood embankments of the Vistula. A ride from Krakow towards Tyniec and its Benedictine abbey can become a trip of its own, with stops along the way. The distance depends on where you start and which way you go, so plan it on a map for your group. The regional portal warns that the route includes gravel and dirt sections and a short, steep climb.

Check the condition of your bikes, your lights and how you’ll get back. Where you share the path with pedestrians, adjust your speed to your surroundings. A long weekend isn’t a good time to assume the routes will be empty.

If you’d rather relax without a long list of plans

An active long weekend doesn’t have to fill every hour. A picnic or a walk is easier to fit around changeable weather when it doesn’t involve lots of travelling. Choose a place the whole group can reach easily. If you’re planning a barbecue, check whether it’s allowed at that spot: an ordinary green area doesn’t automatically mean you can use one.

You can also give your walk a small theme, for example looking for interesting details on townhouses, or choosing a few places you haven’t visited for a long time.

Agree on a rainy-day plan in advance

An escape room lets you move part of your get-together indoors, but it’s a separate service. Don’t assume the organiser will swap an outdoor booking for one at the last minute. Check the rules for changing the date when you buy. In Ojców, the caves and the castle only give you shelter when they’re open, so check their hours before you go.

Choosing for a particular day

Ojców needs more attention to getting there, a city game needs you to check the conditions in advance, and a bike ride needs your equipment and route prepared. If the weather turns bad, you can switch activities without writing the day off.

The best long weekend leaves you with energy for the journey home, too. It’s worth ending the outing wanting to do it again, rather than sticking to the plan at the expense of the whole group.
